A letter from Janet Glossic
814 N. Chauncey Ave.
February 2007
I would like to make an honorable mention for two very hard working young men who live on my street. Adam Berning and his friend (sorry, I don't know the friend's name) are both Purdue students. Adam lives at 82O N. Chauncey with his sister, Melissa. On the morning after we had the big snow storm, they went out and purchased a big new snow blower and immediately started using it to clear snow on neighborhood sidewalks. They did much more than removing the snow from their own property. They made a point to remove snow from the property of neighbors who they know are elderly and disabled. This included several neighbors, and they spent many hours working, both that day and the next. I had spent several hours removing my snow by hand, and when came out with their snow blower, they offered to finish the job for me. The next day after we received even more snow, they came back and did it again, as well as touching up the sidewalks of the other neighbors. These young men asked nothing for their labor although they could have chosen to profit from it.
When I offered to give the boys some money or bake them some cookies, they said that wasn't necessary. I told them I would contact the neighborhood association because I believe they deserve recognition.
I know that many people in the neighborhood are concerned about maintaining the family neighborhoods. We do have quite a few students living among us, so I think it is important to recognize when they are being good neighbors and contributing to the welfare of the whole neighborhood.
Ed. - Thanks for writing Janet and you are right to recognize the good things that people do for all of us.
